What I found from Terry Gross’s interview of the Colbert Report that made her be successful at gathering surprising/compelling point of view was her multiple private interviews throughout the years bringing up thought provoking questions like to Colbert, “Did you find yourself becoming more politic from doing the The Daily Show.” diving into the mindset of what Colbert truly thought about the stance he made on his show. Colbert would to begin to describe himself, “More Liberal,” then he had originally thought because he had never thought of himself as that political. Which I find that shocking due to his character that he plays on his show is roughly described as, “Papa Bear,” who was an belligerent nature. He would always advise his guest to disabuse the character so that this could be a fun experience for everyone.

Where Terry Gross pulls important ideas or reveals insight from Colbert by pulling out certain clips of what the interviewed person has said, like in the Colbert report, Terry had pulled out when Colbert had made comedy from the press along with the president and ask, “What was the reaction?” This question was to engage Colbert to describe what he was looking for in his audience and how he handled the situation. This revealed how he wasn’t really paying attention to the crowd’s reaction just doing what was on his mind. He then goes into talking about reading one negative comment and one positive comment that Colbert took away from his experience. Terry had Colbert reveal his view and insight on what he sees as important.

What Terry takes away from the interview is the perseverance of Colbert that provided a new spin on political ideas that made it fun to talk about and do so many other accomplishments. She took away how persistence can pay off in good deeds and while some will be satisfied with just having a show, to go above and beyond is what really makes your life meaningful.

What I hope to emulate from Terry is her prior research to help create thought provoking questions that can lead to surprising responses. Not only to get that insight but to learn something from that insight so that I can grow as a person in later life when talking to others.

Comedian Louis C.K: Finding laughs post- divorce

One thing I really liked about this interview is that it kept me engaged and wanting to read the whole thing. There was never a part where I was bored or uninterested. Terry Gross wasn’t afraid to ask hard questions about custody, being divorced or his overall life in general. She asks the questions so you can see what his life is actually like and how he can bring his new life into his comedy acts. I really enjoyed this interview because I feel like i got a good overall sense for Louis C.K and Gross asked all the questions that I was wondering myself. I wondered about his children and how he makes that work with his own life. The same questions were asked so I got my answer. Gross is very good at interviews, she’s not afraid to dig into topics, she keeps it enjoyable so that you want to keep listening and overall it was a good interview to listen too.

  3. The interview that I listened to was Ray Charles where Terry looks deeper into his history and his culture and why he does what he does. Something I found interesting in this interview is that he was talking about how no matter what color you were music was a thing that was marvelous and had little segregation. He also talked about how the music like the blues and country he could sing but he wasn’t a blues singer or a country singer and these types of music you didn’t have to really think about what it meant. When Ray Charles has a song he likes to sing it to himself and see what he feels during it and if it makes him feel good inside because he really cares about his music and he wants to share what he feels with everyone else.

  4. She is so successful, surprising and compelling due to the fact that she isn’t scared to open up and speak her mind. In the passage fresh air she talks about intercourse and not only what she’s heard but her own personal experiences. If in an interview instead of just answering the questions she will come out and say how or in what way it relates to her on a personal level. Terry is using a self to conflict connection in order to create that personal connection to others that probably had the same things or problems.

  5. In Terry Gross’s interview with Ray Charles she first discusses his style of music. Ray talks about his love for country music and why he wanted to record them. Terry explains to him that when she first heard his music she didn’t think of them as country songs, she just thought of them as “Ray Charles records”, she found out later they were considered country songs. Terry keeps the conversation going with Ray for a very long time, she thinks quickly and always has something to say back to him to keep the conversation going. She asks him many questions that might make others asking. For example, she speaks with him about segregation at his school and about how he became blind.

Terry Gross interview with Ray Charles was amazing. Especially since it was my first interview I heard of Ray Charles. The way she gather information from Ray Charles is great. She got him to talk about how music made him feel and how certain song he felt attach to than others. She got Charles to talk about his skills with the piano and how he was so eager to hear music that he would write the notes first the play the piano. What make Terry so good at this is that she automatically connects the listener to the person being interview. It’s almost as if you were there yourself uncovering these answers.
