HELLO ENG 122!

HELLO ENG 122!

Welcome to the new semester!  I’m totally jazzed to get going on the great work we’ll be doing this term.  An integral part of our course will be working with ePortfolio.  Please note: I’ll be posting our JOURNAL questions in your own designated space, ENG 122 SCHEDULE*  Your job is to respond on your ePortfolio space (a journal page) AND to respond here so I can give you credit.  In order to receive credit for your response, you must post before class time.  There can be no exceptions to this rule: HW is either done or it’s not.  This rule is concrete.

* You’ll should see it labeled, with the prompt,  just like on the weekly menu.  Make sense?

  1. HABITS OF THE CREATIVE MIND QUESTION SET 1

    WHAT IS MEETING HALF WAY?

From the book the definition of meeting halfway is being open to the possibility that using writing to explore you’re minds connective powers can help you both to think new thoughts and to think new ways. An example of that is a personal experience that I had when my teacher had given me an assignment and I had done it half way, and then I had given up about half way because I had closed off my mind that it wasn’t important, but by taking a break and then coming back to it and finishing the last half I had realized how important it really was. I should have kept a more open mind and a better idea that the work was important and It could have gotten done quicker rather than procrastinating the last half.

WHAT IS THE PHILOSOPHY OF HABITS?

From the book the definition of the philosophy of habits is the overarching goal of this book to make the creativity a daily habit of mind. The main idea was to make sure that in order to keep a habit then you need to have or make it somewhat or something creative. In other words it means to make a study way creative so that way you can remember what you are studying better rather than looking at a blank sheet of paper. An example of this is my own personal experience was when I was in middle school, my teacher had created a way for us to remember vocabulary words and that was to divide the words into the colors of the rainbow and that way it will stick within your memory better. By creating it a fun way to study then it was semi easier to study for her vocabulary tests/quizzes.

WHAT IS REFLECTION? HOW MIGHT ASSEMBLY DIFFER FROM CREATION?

From the book the definition of reflection is that we can see connected to all the creative archives that can be accessed on the web and reference to materials that cover everything from punctuation ext. ext. With assembly it would give a more organized structure to your writing but it may create the aspect to the person as boring and not very well liked. With creation it is more open and free structured this could it fun for the person doing the work and it also gives them a way for them to know what works for them as well.

HOW DOES THIS READING FIT WITH YOUR PERSONAL EXPERIENCE? HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT THIS APPROACH?

I would have to say personal experience I have had was when I tried two different ways to study and got two different results on tests/quizzes. The first way I studied was just straight flashcards with a blue pen and I had studied them for an hour every night for about a week, took the test and then received it back after a couple days and realized that after feeling like I did good I get the paper back I have received a low grade in the 70’s. The other way I had studied was I had created my own way to study and that was to color code the cards and break them up into small groups called “chunking” and once I finished one stack of cards I would add them to the next pile and try two stacks and it went on and on till I reached the end of the pile. I had taken the test/quiz not knowing the result and I was quite pleased with the outcome. I had received a B and I was very happy. I feel as though it depends on the person. Some people like a nice structure and some like to keep it calm and relaxed and do what they know that will help them move along.

  2. What is meeting half-way?
Meeting half-way means to be open to the fact that writing to explore one’s mind connective powers, can help to both think new thoughts and think in the ways. It means to be open-minded to new and unfamiliar ideas, and not be dismissive towards them.

What is the philosophy of habits?
The philosophy of habits is an event or events one does to bypass boredom. Habits consist of both healthy and unhealthy decisions to keep one both interested and interactive.

What is reflection? How might assembly differ from the creation of a full length project?
Reflection means to read your work and take serious consideration a d thought about your ideas, and how to make your essay more developed. The assembly of a full length written project is to organize your ideas into a fluid transition from one idea to the next usually in a formal format, introduction, 3 or more body paragraphs and a conclusion. Also, to keep the reader engaged throughout the entire project.

How does this reading fit with your prior experience? How do you feel about this approach?
This reading is new to me, but I feel like I could get to understand the material. I feel somewhat confident with this approach, it will be a little difficult to grasp.

  4. Journal 1
this book can provide a structure , a host of activities ,prompts ,and so on. However, for the second half we have to use our own imagination and creativity to write, and using writing to cultivating our mind. Always To keep asking myself “why is that and that” ,and sometimes be a skepticism to see things in different perspective, which may give me new ideas. Try to develop a curious habit in mind.
I think the main difference between assembly and creation of a full length written project is one are created and edited by someone else, but the other one come out from other person’s mind, its not a counterfeit.
To be honest I don’t have a pleasurable prior writing experience. I always find writing as a boring subject to do, and I suck at it. In order to be more specific about why I suck at it. Firs of all, There is a lot of words that I’m familiar with, but it wont show its own existence in my mind whenever I need it.

  5. What is meeting half-way?

In Habits of the Creative Mind, meaning half-way is by open to the possibility that using writing to explore your mind’s connective powers can help you both to think new thoughts and to think in new ways. For example, my teacher gives me a writing assignment, instead of waiting last minute to write the essay. I begin to start and soon find myself fading away onto another topic or become distracted. Instead of giving up, I take a break and come back to what I was doing. I later find out what I was doing what more important than the distraction.

What is the philosophy of habits?

In Habits of the Creative Mind, this philosophy of habits is no single, linear path through the process of learning to write well; indeed, what makes learning to write well so difficult is that it can’t be learned by moving in orderly steps from the easiest concepts to the most complex. In other words, writings must be creative and cannot be plain. For example, instead of making your basic flash cards to study, you make up a new song to memorize.

    What is reflection?

In the Habits of the Creative Mind, is that we can connect to all the creative archives that can be accessed on the web and reference to materials that cover everything from punctuation go usage to the conventions governing the citation of online resources. With assembly it would keep your work more organized, but it could be considered “boring” to most people or others. With creation your writing can be more open and freer to write whatever you would like.

How does this reading fit with your personal experience? How do you feel about this approach?

I feel like by using what the book has said so far these “tips” can be used on day to day work. Like studying, writing etc. I feel at first this approach will be hard to go about because I am not use to it.

  6. 1. what is meeting Halfway?
In habits of the creative mind meeting halfway is being able to find a midpoint and to be able too have an open mind to new thoughts and ideas on how to write or when looking at reading.

    2. What is the philosophy of Habits?
    – In habits the philosophy is the conciousness that underlies our approach to writing. It also talks about how writing is more than having a set procedure but to create a piece of art that opens the mind of other readers.

    3. What is reflection? How might assembly differ from the creation of a full length project?
    – reflections is the design that will come together only when you can step back and contemplate the whole. Assembling is putting all your thoughts together and creation is actually showing your thoughts and expressing what you took away from that certain passage.

    4. How does this reading fit with your personal experience? How do you feel about this approach?
    – After reading this I very much agree with it because to be a good writer you need to be open minded to new ideas of writing and want to to learn new strategies and to be able to reflect on what your doing.

  7. What is meeting halfway?

In Habits of the Creative Mind they mention meeting halfway to being open minded about their writing style. Their approach to writing as they say is very different from the way high school has taught me. By meeting them writers half way I can have my doubts and skepticism but also be open minded to the way they perceive writing and how it should be.

What is the philosophy of habits?

The writers talk about habits as you get a book and read it cover to cover straight through. In all my english classes when i did read the book that is exactly what i did. I opened the book no matter what it was and read it cover to cover. By reading the writers philosophy is different because they say that you are able to jump around in the book and still understand what is happening. By this method we are breaking the habit of opening the book and not thinking about how we are going to read it and where we are going to start.

What is reflection? How might assembly differ from the creation of a full-length written project?

Reflection referred to in Habit of the Creative Mind is that the passages in the book will reflect on the writing style they are trying to inform us about throughout the book. They want to reflect on the way we think and how it can change overtime.

How does this reading fit with your prior experience? How do you feel about this approach?

I like this reading a lot more than ones in high school. When i started reading i was interested in learning what their techniques were and how their outlook in writing was different than what i have been taught for so long. I feel this approach will be interesting and may better help me with writing. I`m open minded to this technique and want to learn more.

  8. Meeting halfway to me obviously means when your teacher meets you 50% of the way you have to meet your teacher with that other 50%. You can’t just expect the teacher to do the majority of the work and you do the bare minimum and hope you past. Same goes for the book there’s going to be a lot of information thrown at you and it’s your job to interpret what that information means. The philosophy behind habits is to get you to make creativity a daily habit by the time you finish the book. Expand and open your mind to become an all the round better writer. Reflection is an art, the author wants us to treat writing as a piece of mosaic. If you try to assemble your writing in steps your on the wrong path. There’s not set order to writing and once you start to add an order to it it become more monotoned and less creative. This reading is most definitely different from how I use to write. I was always the one who wrote in steps and thought that would be okay, but the approach that Habits of the Creative Mind shows feels way better than just being a monotoned writer.
